Background

The NRI is designed to account for the total surface area of Oregon, including land and water. However, it does not collect detailed land use data on federal lands. The inventory is primarily designed to provide information on the nation’s non-federal lands.

NRI Results for Oregon

In 1997, the total surface area of Oregon was estimated to be 62,161,000 acres.

Category Acres Percent
Federal lands 31,260,400 50.3%
Non-federal rural lands 28,858,100 46.4%
* Developed lands 1,222,300 2.0%
** Permanent water 820,200 1.3%
* Urban lands and rural transportation lands
** This does not include Pacific Ocean waters.

One unusual aspect of the Oregon surface area results is a wide variation in the permanent water estimates, ranging from a high of more than 923,000 acres in 1987 to a low of about 660,000 acres in 1992. These changes were due primarily to the expansion and contraction of large closed basin lakes in Harney, Lake, and Malheur counties in southeastern Oregon. Long term wet and dry cycles dramatically effect the size of these lakes.
