McKenzie Watershed (HUC 17090004)

Description of Watershed

The McKenzie River originates high in the South Sisters Wilderness Area and drains west, flowing over 90 miles until in joins the Willamette River north of Eugene. This watershed includes portions of Jefferson, Lane, Linn, and Deschutes counties.

The McKenzie watershed encompasses an area 300 square miles, this is larger than the state of Rhode Island. Over 800,000 acres are in the watershed are in forest use or private and public and private land and wilderness areas. Over 34,000 acres are in agriculture production, of which 1,200 acres are in filbert production. There are 225,000 acres of federally-designated wilderness areas in the watershed. The McKenzie River Watershed provides clean drinking water to over 200,000 people. Key species found in the watershed are spring chinook, salmon, summer steelhead, bull trout, Red-legged frogs, and Great Blue herons.
