PORTLAND, OR, August 18, 2008 – A ranching family from Oregon’s Curry County has been featured in two television broadcasts about working lands conservation recently produced by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

The videos highlight conservation measures the family has taken over the years to protect soil, water, plants, wildlife and open space while maintaining a successful working ranch. Siblings Mary and Terry Wahl, along with other family members, tend the 125-year old family operation on the southern Oregon coast and are featured discussing some of their land stewardship activities.

Managed grazing, for example, is a key component of their strategy to protect waterways, fish and wildlife from livestock. “It’s helped in a lot of ways,” Terry explains. “We’ve been able to concentrate our fertilization program and the animals on smaller area, and every time we’ve fenced this ranch down, we’ve also been able to up our numbers.”

Conservation activities on private lands not only protect the environment, but also the ranching way of life. With such measures, as Mary explains, “ranches and natural resources, instead of disappearing, become the cornerstone for these areas, and we build on that and build more conservation and restoration into our ranching operations.”

The video features, Landowners Lead Oregon Preservation Effort (2:03) and Fences Improve Pastures & Habitat in Oregon (1:47), can be viewed through the NRCS Web site at:
