Eugene, OR, May 8, 2008
– The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service
(NRCS) announced yesterday that producers in the McKenzie Watershed will have
two additional weeks to apply for the Conservation Security Program (CSP) in
fiscal year 2008. The sign up will close on May 30, 2008.
“NRCS recognizes that farmers and ranchers are busy in their fields. We want
to give them as much time as possible,” said NRCS State Conservationist Bob
Graham. “The sign up has been extended to allow producers adequate time to
gather natural resource information and complete the required self-assessment
and applicant interview.”
To help agricultural producers determine if they are eligible and prepare
program documentation, NRCS has scheduled a final CSP workshop:
May 19, 2008
2:00 to 4:00 P.M.
Leaburg Fire and Rescue Training Center
42869 McKenzie Hwy, Leaburg, OR
“Agricultural producers – large scale farmers and small acreage growers – who
actively take steps to protect natural resources on their working lands should
come to the workshop,” Graham explained. “CSP financially rewards growers for
their stewardship and provides additional payments to help you do even more.”
The current sign up is open in the McKenzie Watershed, which includes
portions of northeast Lane and southeast Linn Counties. Those who own or operate
working lands – including cropland, vineyards, orchards, rangeland, and
pastureland – are encouraged to apply for CSP.

CSP is a voluntary conservation program that supports ongoing stewardship of
private, agricultural working lands and rewards those producers who are meeting
the highest standards of conservation and environmental management on their
operations. CSP has been offered on a rotational basis in as many watersheds as
funding allows. Oregon’s McKenzie Watershed is one of 51 watersheds across the
country eligible for the current sign-up, which was originally scheduled to run
from April 18 to May 16, 2008. The sign up deadline has been extended until May
30.
The Natural Resources Conservation Service provides voluntary technical and
