PORTLAND, OR, January 11, 2007 – From now until January 31, land managers have the opportunity to apply for cost-share for conservation practices through the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) for funding in Fiscal Year 2007.

WHIP is a voluntary program that provides both technical and financial assistance to non-federal landowners and tribes to create, restore and enhance fish and wildlife habitats. In Oregon, program emphasis is placed on enhancement and restoration of upland habitats and plant communities, habitats for threatened and endangered species, and locally identified species of concern.

In 2007, WHIP cost-share for eligible practices will be at 50 percent of the average cost of installation. Cost-share agreements are generally developed for a period of five to ten years.

Interested landowners should contact the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) at their local USDA Service Center. NRCS accepts applications for WHIP year-round on a continuous basis. Funding decisions are made at cutoff points during the year, with the current ranking period closing on January 31, 2007.

For more information about WHIP, including local program priorities, approved practices, and cost-share rates, please visit http://www.or.nrcs.usda.gov

NRCS provides products and services that enable people to be good stewards of the nation’s soil, water, and related natural resources on non-Federal lands.
